Japan is Like a Tea Bag
昨日の夜にtwitter経由で、日本の地震や津波を知り、必死に様子をおいかけています。昨日の夜の段階で、金曜の朝の授業の担当の教員からは、お見舞いのと、この状況なので授業の欠席は構わないとのメールをもらいました。深夜まで情報収集をしつつ就寝、今日は朝から授業に参加しました。
朝の段階で、ニュースが広まり、朝一で、所属している博士課程担当の学事の方から、お見舞いとサポートするからとのメールをもらいました。その後も多数のクラスメート他からお見舞い、励ましのメールをもらいました。
そして、午前中に大学のInternational Centerからオフィシャルに以下のようなメールが流れます。このメールには励まされました。
Dear UCSD International Student,
We are deeply concerned about the well-being of our students and their families and loved ones that may be affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. It may be difficult for you to stay focused on your academics, as well as maintain your commitment to supporting family and friends in Japan who may be dealing with the current situation. We want not only to assure you that our thoughts are with you during these difficult times, but also to offer sources of practical support. We are available to provide support and resources to any UCSD student who is affected directly or indirectly by the situation in Japan, especially our Japanese students and scholars.
For our international students from Japan, the UCSD International Center is ready to support and assist you in any way that we can. If your studies are interrupted or your finances affected, we strongly encourage you to meet with an international student advisor to discuss possible implications for your immigration or academic status and the best way to protect them. It is important to remember that we have caring people on campus ready to stand with you in this time of uncertainty. You should know that all counselors and staff in Counseling and Psychological Services Office are eager to listen to your concerns and provide you with practical coping advice. You may also contact your undergraduate college or graduate departments directly for assistance. All are available to assist you in any way that they can.

午後も合う度に色々な方が心配してくれて、来週の試験や最終レポートについても、本当に学業に集中できない状況が続いた場合には、必要な措置を検討してもらえるそうです。

海外にいると十分に様子が分からず、必要以上に不安になるものです。ニュースを見る範囲で想像を絶する被害の大きさに恐怖を感じます。でも、一方で多くの日本人が何て力強くこの問題の解決に立ち向かっているのだろうと、誇らしくも思います。どうか、日本にいる皆様の無事を祈っております。
最後に、僕が好きな言葉の一つに、エレナー・ルーズベルト(元ファーストレディ)の"A woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong she is until she gets into hot water. "というものがあります。そして、"Japan is like a tea bag."でもあると思っています。
